Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA), known on the streets as ecstasy, in terms of psychotherapy, has been shown in studies to help people overcome PTSD, and other disorders like anxiety, depression and addiction, according to the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS).

A study funded by MAPS was published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology in April 2011 showed that 83% of the people who received MDMA-assisted psychotherapy had a clinically substantial reduction in the severity of their depression. People who had received a placebo in the first stage of the study and then received MDMA-assisted psychotherapy were amongst the people who showed massive and long-lasting improvements.

Medical marijuana is also another treatment approach with a similar positive track record among veterans. It has now been approved in all of Canada and 9 states for the treatment of PTSD.
